Panorama - Cliffs of Moher (lower ledge) |
|
The Cliffs of Moher rise dramatically out of the Atlantic, between the
towns of Lehinch and Doolin.
The line of sandstone and limestone cliffs is 6 miles long and up to 670 ft high. The cliffs can be dangerous, due to high winds and crumbling cliff tops -- a couple of people die every year. This place is absolutely spectacular - pictures just don't do it justice.
Hag's Head
Cú Chulainn is a mythical figure in Celtic literature. While a fierce warrior (the "hero of Ulster") and leader of the Red Branch Nights, he was also much desired by women. But there was one nagging hag, the termagant Mal, who was extremely relentless in her pursuit. Like all good men put in the sights of a bossy woman, Cú Chulainn tried to escape. The chase eventually took them down to Loop Head, the cliffs at the western-most point of County Clare (30 miles southwest of the Cliffs of Moher.) Cú Chulainn leapt on to a great rock stack 30 feet out to sea. Mal lustily leaped after him, and successfully reached the stack. But when Cú immediately leaped back to the mainland, the hag faltered in her jump, fell short, and disappeared into the raging ocean below. The witchy Mal's body turned the sea bloody red, and was swept northwards to this point on the Cliffs of Moher. Hence the names Loop Head ("Loop" is Irish for "Leap"), and Hag's Head for these coastal point. |
