Panorama - O'Brien's Castle on Inisheer Island

Inisheer Island is the smallest of the 3-island Aran chain. The Aran Islands are remarkable for their unending web of stone walls, as you can see in the panorama above. Here they surround "O'Brien's Castle", a crumbling 15th century tower house.

In the villages on the northern coast of Inisheer, you can purchase the Aran Islands' best known export: "Aran ganseys" - distinctive white hand-knit woolen sweaters.

You can catch ferries going to Inisheer (or the other two islands of Inishmoor and Inishmaan) from the small village of Doolin, or the larger town of Galway. Bring your sea legs -- the ride over was a bit rough!
